On Saturday, February 9th the Rotary Club of Playa del Carmen Seaside presented the 3rd Annual Riviera Maya Cook-Off hosted by Restaurant Latitude 20 in Puerto Aventuras. This year, 10 local chili chefs and chef teams vied for the title “Best Chili on the Riviera Maya”. The event was sold out with well over 100 people coming from all over to taste the chilies and cast a vote for their favorite. When all the votes were tallied, Sonia Shankle DeLong and Tim DeLong, Team “Gringo Down”, pulled out the win for the second year in a row with their Texas Competition Chili. Second place went to Jenni and Bob Walker, Team “Keepin’ it Weird”, with a New Mexican Chili Verde. Third place was awarded to Michele Kinnon, “Evil Vegan”, for her Vegan 3-Bean Chili.
The event raised just over 40,000 pesos which will be used by Seaside Rotary to support valuable community service organizations such as Transformar Educando, Friends of Puerto Aventuras, The KKiS Project, El Hongo Community Center and Fundacion Contando con un Amigo among others. Monies raised at fundraisers like this, as well as the upcoming Seaside Rotary Golf Classic, will also help support Seaside Rotary’s ongoing clean water and feeding programs and other initiatives that further the mission to help the children in our service area.
The organizers would like to thank to Jim Stubbs and the amazing staff at Latitude 20 for hosting the event and making sure it ran smoothly. Thank you to the volunteers and to all of the wonderful chili aficionados who came out to cook and to taste and to support the efforts of Seaside Rotary. Plans are already in the works for next year’s event, which promises to be even bigger and better! Who will take the title next year?!
