Over the past 2 weeks, in a collaborative effort, the Rotary Clubs of Tulum, Playa del Carmen Seaside and Playa del Carmen Empresarial joined forces with local volunteers and community advocates to send relief to the victims of the flooding that recently devastated parts of the Mayan zone, just 2 hours south of Playa del Carmen. Our Mayan neighbors to the south were suffering and these clubs banded together to help.
Collections centers were set up in Playa del Carmen, Puerto Aventuras, Akumal and Tulum. Donations were received and inventoried. Monetary donations poured in and were used to purchase medicines, dry goods, sanitary, hygiene and cleaning supplies.
Finally, our tireless volunteers packed their trucks and vehicles and drove it all down to the village of Chumpon where they were then distributed it to those most in need.
There is still much to be done and our efforts will continue as the homes and particularly the marmalade factory are repaired and reopened. So many people selflessly gave of their time, money and skills.
There are too many people to thank individually but I do need to send a special “Yum Botik” to Claudia Hurtado Valenzuela, Claudia Muñoz Bono, Carolina Rath and Russell Rosendo Granger who have invaluable and true “Friends of Rotary” throughout this mission. They are angels and great neighbors.
