Seaside Rotary & Playa Animal Rescue Host Valentine’s Day “Yappy Hour”
Love was in the air this Valentine’s season and it had four legs, wagging tails, and plenty of personality.
On Sunday afternoon, The Admiral Sports Bar in Playa del Carmen transformed into a red-carpet runway for the Valentine’s Day “Yappy Hour” Dog Parade & Costume Contest, a joint fundraiser hosted by the Rotary Club of Playa del Carmen Seaside and Playa Animal Rescue (PAR).
What unfolded was more than just a fun costume contest. It was a celebration of community, compassion, and collaboration and a reminder of what can happen when local organizations come together with a shared purpose.
Two Missions, One Afternoon
Seaside Rotary and Playa Animal Rescue may serve different populations, but their missions intersect in meaningful ways.
Since 2012, Seaside Rotary has focused on improving the daily lives and long-term prospects of vulnerable children and families in Playa del Carmen and surrounding communities. Through fundraising, hands-on volunteer work, and club-led initiatives, Seaside Rotary prioritizes projects that deliver measurable, lasting impact.
One of those initiatives, and a direct beneficiary of this event, is Kicks4Kids, an ongoing program that provides new, high-quality sneakers to disadvantaged children throughout the Riviera Maya. For many children, a sturdy pair of shoes is not just about comfort. It is about dignity, confidence, and the ability to attend school safely and consistently.
Playa Animal Rescue, meanwhile, has been operating as a no-kill dog rescue since 2011. PAR’s mission is both immediate and long-term: rescuing dogs suffering on the streets, restoring their health physically and emotionally, and placing them into permanent, loving homes. The organization also promotes spay and neuter programs as a critical solution to the region’s ongoing street dog overpopulation.
By combining forces for “Yappy Hour,” the two organizations demonstrated how animal welfare and human welfare are often deeply connected within a community.

A Runway Full of Heart
The afternoon featured dozens of dogs, from playful pups to dignified seniors, strutting down a Valentine’s-themed red carpet before a cheering crowd. Costumes ranged from sweet to hilarious. Some dogs embraced Cupid-inspired ensembles. Others leaned into creative flair with matching handler outfits, coordinated accessories, and plenty of personality.
The judging panel brought professional expertise and local credibility to the event. Judges included:
- Marcella Ramirez, veterinarian at Gaia Pet Care
- Yanne Aguierra, groomer at Gaia Pet Care
- Jenny, Grooming Manager at Que Chulada Pet Shop
Their task? No easy feat. Choosing winners among such a spirited group required careful consideration!
Category winners included:
- Addie – Best Senior Dog
- Baily – Prettiest Girl
- Nugget – Most Handsome Boy
- Saya and Milo – Best Pair
- Penny – Best Large Breed
- Lucy – Best Medium Breed
- Poochinela – Best Small Breed
- Nick – Best Rescue Dog
The coveted “Top Yapper” title, decided by popular vote, went to Bailey, whose enthusiastic support from the crowd made for an especially lively finale.
But the true winners were the programs the event supported.
Community Support in Action
Funds were raised through contest registrations and voting ticket sales, with proceeds designated for Seaside Rotary’s Kicks4Kids program. In addition, Heath St. Clair, owner of The Admiral and a longtime supporter of Playa Animal Rescue, generously donated 10 percent of all food and beverage sales directly to PAR.
Local businesses also stepped forward to contribute prizes and show their support. Sponsors included:

Why Events Like This Matter So Much
Events like this Valentine’s Day “Yappy Hour” do more than raise funds. They create visibility for ongoing programs, strengthen partnerships between nonprofits and local businesses, engage volunteers and supporters in a positive, accessible way and invite new community members to learn about Rotary and PAR’s work.
Most importantly, it reinforced the idea that philanthropy in Playa del Carmen is community-driven. It is powered not by large institutions alone, but by neighbors, pet lovers, business owners, and volunteers working side by side.
The success of the Valentine’s Day “Yappy Hour” highlights what is possible when organizations collaborate rather than compete for attention and resources. Blending fun with purpose, Seaside Rotary and Playa Animal Rescue created an event that was festive, inclusive, and meaningful. It reminded us that service does not always have to look formal. Sometimes it looks like a red carpet, a wagging tail, and a crowd cheering for a good cause.
Thank you to everyone who participated, the dog handlers, the judges, the volunteers, the sponsors, and the enthusiastic spectators. You helped turn a Sunday afternoon into something that will make a lasting difference for children who need proper footwear and animals who need loving homes.
That is Rotary in action. And that is community at its best. Enjoy some of the scenes from our event.
