Recently, members of the Rotary Club of Playa del Carmen Seaside were enlisted to help sand and paint several dozen pieces of furniture for a school in the Cristo Rey neighborhood. There were picnic tables and benches, chairs and bookshelves, all things a school needs to make a cheerful and productive learning space for its students.
Among the items we were tasked with finishing was a puppet theatre. Once this work was completed, one of our more creative club members took the initiative to create some simple but cute and colorful puppets for the kids to use. This sparked an idea to organize a puppet making day and invite some of the children in Puerto Aventuras to come and paint even more puppets, to keep themselves or to donate to the children in Cristo Rey.
Seaside Rotarians Deborah Mahan, Barbara Lindenblatt and Teresa Cleaver enlisted the help of a few Friends of Rotary to organize an afternoon of creativity and fun for our local Puerto Aventuras kids. Thank you to Andrea, Pauline and Jill for pitching in to help the kids with their creations. Thank you to Jim and the staff at Latitude 20 for the use of the space. And thank you to all the kids who donated their time and talents to help us bring a little joy to a group of children they will probably never meet. If that isn’t #serviceaboveself I donĀ“t know what is. We might even have a few future Rotarians in the bunch!
